Fast bowler Mitchell McClenaghan will remain with New Zealand for their two-Test series against South Africa next month.

McClenaghan was originally only part of the squad for the three Twenty20 Internationals, but has been called up to the five-day fold as a replacement for the injured Tim Southee.

"Mitchell has been an impressive performer over the past couple of domestic seasons and deserves this opportunity following a promising start to international cricket during the T20I series in South Africa," said coach Mike Hesson.

"Mitchell is a talented and exciting young fast bowler who has the ability to unsettle batsmen with his pace and bounce. We are confident if the opportunity arises during the tour he will perform well during the Test series."

The first Test gets underway at Newlands in Cape Town on 2 January.
