Batsman Hashim Amla and spinner Robin Peterson have been ruled out of South Africa's third and final ODI against New Zealand at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom on Friday.

Amla did not play in Tuesday's second encounter in Kimberley after sustaining a right-quadricep injury earlier in the week, and Peterson split to webbing on his right hand during the game.

"Hashim has been withdrawn from the last ODI because we felt it would be a 50-50 call with his quad strain going into the match and we didn't want to risk him with the Test match against Pakistan less than a week away," said team manager Dr Mohammed Moosajee.

"Robin split the webbing of the last digit of his right hand while trying to field a ball off his own bowling in the eighth over of his spell. He needed stitches, and will not be able to take part in the final game."

The left-handed Dean Elgar has been called up as a replacement for Amla, while Moosajee confirmed debutant Aaron Phangiso will enter the playing XI in Peterson's absence. Fast bowler Dale Steyn, meanwhile, will rejoin the squad after he was rested for the second ODI.
