Australia have called up batsman Usman Khawaja to replace David Warner for the first two ODIs against the West Indies, after the latter picked up a thumb injury while batting in the nets on Wednesday.

Warner was struck on the thumb by fast bowler Mitchell Johnson, and scans revealed a minor fracture. It is unclear how long it will take to heal, and if he will be available to play in the other three games.

Cricket Australia physiotherapist Kevin Sims said: "David Warner was struck on the left thumb by Mitchell Johnson in the nets. While the fracture is very minor, it is not worth taking any risks.

"The injury will keep him out of at least the next two Commonwealth Bank Series matches against West Indies. We'll assess how he is progressing after that to determine his availability for the remainder of the series."

The first two ODIs will be played on 1 and 3 February, both in Perth at the WACA.
