England captain Alastair Cook was left frustrated by his side's batting performance in the third ODI against India, which saw them all out for 155 and thus lose by seven wickets to go two-one down in the series.

Only Joe Root managed to get a score above 30, and even that was only 39, as they found themselves dismissed in the 43rd over. India then chased the score down thanks to 77 not out from Virat Kohli, with 22 overs to spare.

A rueful Cook said afterwards: "One hundred and fifty was nowhere near enough on that wicket. Credit to the way India bowled. They put us under pressure and didn't give us any free hits to get us going.

"So 155, you're not really going to defend that unless it's a freak day. So we tried our hardest in the field but the damage had already been done."

He added: "We didn't actually get out to many attacking shots. We actually got out to more defensive shots so that is obviously a concern. It's frustrating. We've certainly got potential to do well out here.

"We're just not quite delivering out there in the middle at the moment. We did in the first game but in the last two games we've played well below our potential and we've been punished quite hard for that."

Cook was far from ready con concede a series defeat though, saying they would gather their wits and put on a better show in the fourth match in Mohali on 23 January, looking to make the fifth match the decider.

He continued: "At the beginning of the series you need to win three games to win the series. We're still in it. We're going to have to regroup, we're going to have to look deep in our dressing room and produce a better performance in Mohali."
