Hurricanes move into semis with Tridents victory
The Hobart Hurricanes advanced to the semi-finals of the Champions League T20 competition after recording a six-wicket victory over the Barbados Tridents in Mohali on Sunday.
After winning the toss and electing to bowl first, the Hurricanes dismissed the Caribbean side for a paltry 113 on a newly-laid wicket at Chandigarh.
The Hurricanes reply didn’t start too well either, with Ben Dunk out for a duck in the first over and Aiden Blizzard (21) surviving two dropped catches, but after Shoaib Malik was joined by Jonathan Wells at the wicket with the score on 71/4, the Tridents were unable to make another breakthrough.
In the end, Malik and Wells finished unbeaten on 39 and 23, respectively, as the Australian outfit reached the score with eight balls to spare.
Earlier, the Tridents struggled to their below-par score after being dismissed two balls short of their allotted 20 overs.
Centurion in the previous match Jonathan Carter (44) was the only Tridents batsman to trouble the bowling consistently as none of the other batsmen were able to set themselves on a new Mohali wicket that didn’t always allow for easy strokemaking.
Neil McKenzie (naught) was the first to fall after he edged Doug Bollinger to Tim Payne with the gloves, before Raymon Reefer (six) and Dilshan Munaweera (18) joined him in the stands to leave the Tridents on 26/3.
Wickets fell with regularity thereafter and only James Franklin and Akeal Hosein was able reach double figures – both were dismissed for 12.
Bollinger and his new ball partner Ben Hilfenhaus finished with figures of 2/27 and 2/14 respectively, but the pick of the bowlers was undoubtedly Xavier Doherty – the left-arm spinner ending the match with figures of 4.27 from his four overs.
