Bangladesh were 42 without loss when rain brought a premature end to the first day of the first Test against West Indies at Kingstown.

The start was delayed due to rain but eventually Bangladesh won the toss and put themselves in to bat.

Openers Imrul Kayes and Tamim Iqbal made a cautious start as they reached tea on 36 without loss.

The teams resumed but just six more runs were added before rain forced them off again.

Kayes was unbeaten on 26 off 52 deliveries with Iqbal 14 not out off 18.5 overs.

The game had been overshadowed by a second string being selected for West Indies after more established names pulled out because of a contract dispute.

The likes of Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan will sit out the clash at Kingstown due to the West Indies Players' Association (WIPA) recommending they boycott the clash because of a long-standing row over retainer contracts for players.

Their absence has led to the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) having to cobble together a squad made up of veterans and up-and-coming youngsters.

The team is being captained by Floyd Reifer, who last played a Test in 1999, while 16-year-old Kraigg Brathwaite has also been included in a 15-man party.

Darren Sammy is the most recognised name with Tino Best also involved.
