All-rounder Ryan McLaren, wicketkeeper-batsmen Quinton de Kock, seamer Chris Morris and spinner Johan Botha were the four South African players sold at Sunday's Indian Premier League player auction.

Morris was recruited by the Chennai Super Kings for $625,000, the Delhi Daredevils bought Botha for $425,000, the Kolkata Knight Riders signed McLaren for $50,000 and De Kock was contracted to Sunrisers Hyderabad for $20,000.

Batsman Herschelle Gibbs, Henry Davids and Rilee Rossouw, wicketkeeper-batsman Dane Vilas, seamers Vernon Philander and Rory Kleinveldt and spinners Paul Harris and Aaron Phangiso, meanwhile, went unsold.

Australian Glenn Maxwell was the auction's biggest earner, as the Mumbai Indians purchased the talented all-rounder for $1,000,000 - $800,000 more than his base price.

"Glenn is an upcoming youngster. He can bat, bowl and I think he is a great fielder. We had thought of some names before we came here and he was one of them," said Mumbai Indians owner Nita Ambani.

The Pune Warriors spent $700,000 on Australian fast bowler Kane Richardson, while the Kolkata franchise believed the services of Sri Lanka spinner Sachithra Senanayake were worth $625,000.

"Sunil Narine is available, almost all of our players are. But the success we had with him and our conditions, we thought we could intensify that kind of attack. We are happy with buying Senanayake, who will add a new dimension to our set-up. And Ryan McLaren as well," added Kolkata chief executive Venky Mysore.

The nine-team tournament will get underway on 3 April, when defending champions Kolkata meet Delhi at Eden Gardens.
