A well-judged innings by Tom Smith helped Lancashire to chase down 208 to win their rain-affected, day-night Friends Provident Trophy clash against Glamorgan by eight wickets at the Swalec Stadium.

Glamorgan had made 172 for eight after the match was reduced to 31 overs per side because of a three and a quarter hour rain break, but Lancashire's target was extended by 35 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis Method.

That did not bother the visitors as Smith helped his side to their fifth victory in six Group D outings.

Smith, who made 87 from 88 balls, and Mark Chilton - his 50 coming up from just 36 balls - shared a match-winning 132 for the third wicket in 17 overs as Lancashire celebrated victory with three overs to spare.

Lancashire, who have already qualified for the quarter-finals from Group D, had won the toss and put Glamorgan in to bat on a green-looking pitch at Cardiff.

But Glamorgan raced to 122 for one in 21 overs before the rain came.

Mark Cosgrove led the way by scoring 67 not out from 61 balls including 10 fours and a six.

He put on 116 in 20 overs with Mike O'Shea, who was one for four changes in the Glamorgan side from their defeat to Essex earlier in the week.

O'Shea fell one short of his half-century caught behind off Sajid Mahmood.

But after the resumption which saw Glamorgan face another 10 overs they lost seven wickets for just the addition of 50 runs, three within the first two overs.

Cosgrove only added one to his total before holing out to long off, Michael Powell was stumped off Gary Keedy, and Tom Maynard and skipper Jamie Dalrymple were both bowled by Oliver Newby, who finished with four for 41.

And the innings fell away with 25 dot balls bowled by Lancashire in the final 10 overs.

Smith and Paul Horton put down useful foundations in Lancashire's pursuit of 6.7 an over with the opening pair adding 68 for the first wicket.

But teenage seamer James Harris broke through twice in consecutive overs bowling Horton via an inside edge and South African batsman Ashwell Prince was caught behind as Lancashire found themselves 76 for two.

Though Smith was dropped off a reverse sweep on 36 with Lancashire on 103 for two he went on to register a 56-ball half-century with six fours and took his side past the winning line.
