Brendon Diamanti has been added to New Zealand's one-day squad for the upcoming tri-series with Sri Lanka and India as well as the Champions Trophy in South Africa.
One place was left vacant when the Black Caps initially announced their limited overs squads last month and the all-rounder's selection was confirmed on Sunday, a day after New Zealand lost the first Test to Sri Lanka by 202 runs in Galle.
The second Test begins in Colombo on Wednesday. New Zealand have also made one change to the squad for the Champions Trophy with fast bowler Daryl Tuffey, part of the Test side in Sri Lanka, chosen ahead of off-spinner Nathan McCullum.
Although the 31-year-old will not be staying on in Sri Lanka for the Twenty20 matches and the one-day series, coach Andy Moles says that is purely due to the spinner friendly conditions on the sub-continent.
"With turning wickets here in Sri Lanka we're keen to have three spinners on call," Moles explained.
"But conditions will be different in South Africa. Two spinners will be sufficient there and Daryl's inclusion will give our seam attack additional depth."
Moles said Diamanti's inclusion in the squad for the games in Sri Lanka would provide the side with additional all-rounder cover.
"Brendon is a strong lower order striker and has good control as a medium pace bowler. He will provide valuable back-up for the squad."
Diamanti is currently playing in India with the New Zealand A side.
Other New Zealand A players set to join the national side in Colombo for the limited overs matches are Shane Bond, Neil Broom, Gareth Hopkins, Peter McGlashan and Kyle Mills.
Ian Butler, who has been playing recently in Britain, will join up with his Black Caps team-mates in Sri Lanka in the next couple of days.
The tri-series against Sri Lanka and India starts on September 8.
