Gareth Andrew narrowly missed a maiden century on a rain-affected second day in Worcestershire's Division One match against Nottinghamshire in the LV County Championship at New Road.
With barely an hour's play possible in two sessions, Andrew scored 15 more runs to reach an unbeaten 92 when Worcestershire were finally dismissed for 334.
This seemed to be a more than useful total on a green, seaming pitch - and it quickly grew in value as the second-in-the-table visitors lost opener Scott Newman in replying with nine for one in five overs.
Worcestershire's lower-order recovery, underpinned by Andrew in stands of 59 with Alexei Kervezee and 84 with Richard Jones, lifted the side out of an awkward position at 181 for six shortly before tea on the opening day.
Left-hander Andrew, already well beyond his previous highest score of 44 when with Somerset in 2004, added two more boundaries to the 12 fours and a six he hit in reaching 77 overnight.
Having punished Mark Ealham for an error in line with a neat glance to fine-leg, he enjoyed a slice of luck when edging Andre Adams to third man.
Adams was also unfortunate when Jones, on 27, survived a chance to Ali Brown at first slip. But the young seamer was bowled for 31, also a career-best, when he played no shot to a ball from Ealham.
A long rain delay did not help Worcestershire, and on the resumption in mid-afternoon Andrew was left stranded after losing his last two partners in the space of seven balls.
Adams (four for 81) bowled Imran Arif, and Ealham completed a return of three for 40 from 25.5 overs when Jack Shantry went lbw.
The home side's inexperienced attack received an immediate boost when Daryl Mitchell held a sharp chance from Newman at second slip in Imran's second over.
For a side facing almost certain relegation, this was a much-improved performance by Worcestershire - and a timely one, with officials under fire the previous evening at the annual members' forum.
A crowd of more than 300 squeezed into the new Graeme Hick Pavilion for a lively question-and-answer debate lasting two hours.
Concern was expressed that top players Steve Davies and Gareth Batty are leaving New Road at the end of the season. Another issue was the team's poor results in the championship, where they have yet to win a match, and the surprise defeat by Ireland in the Friends Provident Trophy.
