Former England opener Marcus Trescothick has questioned Jonathan Trott's exclusion from England's ODI outfit for the upcoming seven-match series against Australia.
Warwickshire star Trott made a great success of his Test debut in the fifth and final Ashes Test, scoring 41 and 119 as the hosts clinched the series with a 197-run triumph at The Oval.
Trescothick, who quit international competition in March 2008, believes 28-year-old Trott should have been added to the limited-overs unit at the conclusion of the Tests.
"I think the selectors have missed a trick in not adding Jonathan to the 15-man ODI squad, which was named before Trott did so well in the last Ashes Test," 33-year-old Trescothick wrote in his column for the Bristol Evening Post.
"I would have thought this was an ideal opportunity to draft in someone who has shown that he can do it under pressure and the pressure doesn't come more intense than he experienced at The Oval.
"He has a great record in domestic Twenty20 and 50-over cricket and I would have thought this would have been a good chance to fast-track him into the team."
Trescothick called on batsmen Joe Denly and Eoin Morgan to make their inclusion in the squad to take on the Aussies count.
"Joe and Eoin are two who have been given a chance and, hopefully, they'll grab it. But I still think they've got a lot to prove," insisted Trescothick.
"They've done okay in county cricket, but they haven't really produced the kind of performances that get people saying 'this bloke has got to play for England'."
Trescothick, who is set to head to the Champions League with the Somerset Sabres in October, reckons all-rounder Dimitri Mascarenhas, who will represent the Otago Volts in the inaugural Twenty20 tournament, should have been given the opportunity to represent England again before joining the New Zealand franchise.
"Dimitri always seems to be in and out the squad and is probably a bit unlucky to miss out this time," he added.
Trescothick is looking for a couple of big performances from leg-spinner Adil Rashid against the men from Down Under and has backed the 21-year-old Yorkshire star to play an instrumental role in the future of English cricket.
"It's good to see Adil in there. He's a cricketer I like a lot and we all want him to come through quickly and be the next Shane Warne. Again, I think he's still got a bit to prove. But if he can produce a few stand-out performances, I'm sure he will go on and become a Test player before too long," he concluded.
