Half-centuries from Mark Wagh and Hashim Amla handed Nottinghamshire a three-day victory over Somerset in their LV= County Championship Division One match at Trent Bridge.

Despite a classy 98 from Somerset skipper Marcus Trescothick and a quick-fire 78 from Damien Wright, the visitors were bowled out for 227 in their second innings, with Paul Franks picking up three for 22.

Set 250 to win, Notts lost opener Neil Edwards in the first over of the run-chase, but a second wicket partnership of 125 between Wagh (70) and Bilal Shafayat (49) put the hosts on their way.

Momentum swung back to Somerset after tea as wickets began to fall at regular intervals, but Amla's international pedigree shone through with another superb innings as the South African star secured a two-wicket win.

Somerset resumed on 120 for six, only 142 ahead, but Trescothick and Wright continued their brilliant seventh-wicket partnership with a succession of boundaries in the morning session.

England seamer Stuart Broad was given short shrift with his only three overs of the day going for 25 as Wright raced to his half-century from 51 balls, thumping 15 fours before he was bowled by a shooter from Luke Fletcher.

Franks then arrived to wrap up the innings, first denying Trescothick a well-deserved century as the left-hander's attempted guide down to third man ended in the hands of Ali Brown at a wide first slip, before Alfonso Thomas edged to second slip and Charl Willoughby was bowled.

Notts had three overs to negotiate before lunch and lost Edwards to the sixth ball of the innings, his defensive edge going straight to Trescothick in the slips.

Wagh and Shafayat batted with increasing confidence as Somerset's bowling looked short of venom apart from the veteran Willoughby, and Notts reached the tea interval without losing any further wickets on 104 for one.

But when Shafayat was lbw to Wright and Wagh was caught in the gully in the following over, the Cidermen sniffed an opportunity.

Thomas had Samit Patel lbw with a delivery that may have been sliding down the leg-side and Zander de Bruyn removed Ali Brown in similar fashion soon after.

In a tense finish, Amla kept his cool despite the loss of Chris Read, Franks and Broad, hitting Willoughby for 18 in one over, and ended the match with a pull to the square leg boundary to finish unbeaten on 64 from 73 balls with nine fours and a six.
