A career-best of 88 from Kyle Hogg ensured his Lancashire side were able to fight their way back into their LV= County Championship match against Yorkshire at Old Trafford.
Hogg and Luke Sutton shared a ninth-wicket partnership of 121 in 52 overs to ensure their side avoided the follow on, something which looked highly unlikely when Lancashire started day three at 187 for six in reply to 447.
Sutton was left stranded on 47 not out as Adil Rashid polished off the final two wickets in the space of four balls in the 122nd over to bowl Lancashire out for 358.
It meant Yorkshire had to settle for a lead of 89 and they advanced that to 200 by closing on 111 for three from 41 overs of their second innings.
Anthony McGrath reached 50 not out off 99 balls but a draw appears likely in this match.
Hogg is 27 on Friday and made his debut for the county as a 17-year-old in 2001. He signed professional terms at Lancashire on the same day as James Anderson but their careers have taken different paths.
Hogg, who hit 11 fours in his 140-ball stay at the crease, has spent time on loan at both Worcestershire and Nottinghamshire and he has not even been awarded his first-team cap at Old Trafford yet.
But his contribution on Wednesday was vital to a side who are firmly in the running for the Championship title.
He and wicketkeeper Sutton came together with the score at 194 for seven after Tom Smith had offered a return catch to Tino Best in the early stages of the day.
Hogg had scored 72 of the century partnership between the two and reached the tenth half century of his career off 84 balls with seven fours.
The partnership was a Lancashire record for said wicket against Yorkshire at Old Trafford but it fell short of the club's overall ninth wicket record in this fixture when the left hander slapped Rashid to Rich Pyrah in the covers.
Rashid then had Daren Powell caught at short leg by Adam Lyth moments later to finish with figures of five for 90 from 38.5 overs.
Azeem Rafiq, who earlier got Glen Chapple caught at mid off by Steve Patterson, finished with four for 92 from 35.
White Rose opener Lyth was then given the chance to become the first man to reach 1,000 Championship runs for the summer.
But, having seen captain Jacques Rudolph edge Powell behind to Sutton in the fourth over, he later pulled Hogg down Stephen Moore's throat at deep backward square leg for 29.
Yorkshire were 56 for two in the 19th and Lyth 18 short of the milestone.
Left-arm spinner Simon Kerrigan later had Jonny Bairstow caught by Smith at backward point in the 32nd before McGrath passed 50 for the ninth time this summer five minutes before the close.
