England have included Warwickshire fast bowler Chris Woakes in their 17-man squad to face Australia in seven ODIs and two T20 internationals.
With Stuart Broad ruled out of the series due to a stomach muscle injury, the uncapped Woakes has been added to the senior team after spells with the England Lions and time in the England Performance Programme.
Woakes is joined in the squad by Surrey paceman Chris Tremlett, who is currently vying to become Broad's immediate replacement in the Test arena.
"With Stuart Broad ruled out of the series, we've needed to bolster our pace bowling stocks - and Chris Woakes comes into the squad after knocking on the door for some time," said national selector Geoff Miller.
"Chris will be hungry for his international debut and vying for a place with a number of other quality pace bowlers."
As predicted, Kevin Pietersen returns to the limited overs squad after being dropped for the series against Pakistan due to a lack of form.
Ravi Bopara has failed to make the cut for the series, but Miller insists that the Essex man is not completely out of the England picture.
"We had a long discussion about Ravi," explained Miller. "He's still very much in our thoughts and we know what he's capable of doing, but at this moment in time he's out playing in South Africa and will continue to do that. We're quite confident that this squad can do a job for us here, and it may be able to do it in the World Cup as well, but it doesn't close the door to anyone else."
Andrew Strauss and Paull Collingwood will share the captaincy duties, with Strauss included in the 50-over squad after which he is replaced by Craig Kieswetter for the T20s, at which point Collingwood takes over the captaincy reins.
While Kieswetter has been included for the shortest form of the game, Steve Davies retains his place as the only wicketkeeper in the 50-over format.
The series serves as a final opportunity for players to state their cases for a place in England's squad for next year's World Cup.
"To pit yourself against the number one ranked ODI side in the world over a seven-match series is the perfect preparation for a World Cup," said Miller.
"We'll be looking to continue the recent run of results the ODI squad has enjoyed over the past 18 months."
