Kevin Pietersen hit his seventh Test century to carry England to 284 for eight declared on day four against West Indies at Lord's.

Pietersen (109) helped England set their opponents an unlikely 401 to win this first Test, sharing stands of 88 for the third wicket with Alastair Cook (65) and 102 for the fourth with Paul Collingwood.

The South Africa-born batsman had to watch as four of his team-mates made hundreds in England's first innings.

But he made no mistake second time around, conspicuously conservative over his first 50 but branching out thereafter with a series of drives either side of the wicket for the majority of his 12 fours on the way to three figures from 122 balls.

West Indies, who this morning extended their first innings from 363 for seven to 437 all out, were indebted largely to handy contributions right down the order - Shivnarine Chanderpaul managing to add only 11 to his overnight 63.

Corey Collymore (three for 58) then took the first three England wickets - but Cook and Pietersen ensured some substance, before a late rush of departures to the spin of Chris Gayle (three for 64) and seam of Dwayne Bravo.

Pietersen, who eventually fell lbw trying to reverse-sweep Gayle, gave just one half-chance on 94 when wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin was unable to hang on to thin edge down the leg side off the off-spinner.

Before stumps, there was time for England to have two overs with the new ball at West Indies, who reached seven without loss.
