What Gavaskar is saying is very noble. But people respond best to cash incentives. Patriotism rings hollow when one pnders about financial security at the end of the playing career. For professional sportsmen/women, its a short, very short work life. They need the financial security that IPL provides. I have seen too many superstars from the past struggle financially at the end of their careers. The IPL is merely sharing the wealth among those who are its principal creators. In the past, the TV stations, the organisers etc., kept it all for themselves. The almighty selectors in India and Pakistan have ruined the careers of so many potential players. Thanks to the IPL and the ICL many of these players are finally getting their turn to shine in the sun. Can Gavaskar honestly deny that regional politics has not often clouded the judgement of selectors? So why take a chance on the national team alone? If u perform in the IPL the national selectors will come begging (e.g., Yusuf Pathan). Even if they don't, u are able to provide for your family, practising the only skill u have. I say, that's how it should be.

"If we were to judge a tournament by on-field vs off-field impact, the Champions League Twenty20 might well be the most distorted that cricket has known..."
