Tim Phillips will remain with Essex for the 2010 season after signing a new one-year deal.
The 28-year-old made his first-class debut for the Eagles back in 1999 and was awarded his county cap in 2006.
Phillips, who had fitness problems in his career, including missing the entire 2003 season with a cruciate ligament problem, has scored 1,190 runs and taken 90 wickets in 51 first-class games.
First team coach Paul Grayson has hailed the all-rounder as a "valuable member" of Essex's squad ahead of the 2010 campaign.
"This is obviously good news, Tim is a valuable member of our playing squad, he enjoyed a full season in 2009," Grayson said on the county's website.
"When he is fit he gives good contributions throughout a campaign.
"I know Tim is looking for a big season in 2010, he will be spending this winter in Cape Town, we are confident he will come back fit and strong and make a big impact on our Division I campaign".
