Nine spectators are killed as the wall of a newly-erected stand extension collapses in Nagpur. With officials opting not to inform the players of the innings-break tragedy for fear of a riot, India and the Black Caps carry on their fifth one-dayer, which the tourists go on to win.

Zimbabwe trio Trevor Gripper, Neil Johnson and Murray Goodwin fall prey to Nuwan Zoysa's hat-trick, as the Sri Lankan seamer strikes with his first three deliveries in the second Test in Harare. The tourists go on to win the match by six wickets.

Fast bowler Michael Holding makes his Test debut, going without a wicket across 127 runs in the first Test against Oz in Brisbane.

England station all nine fielders and their wicketkeeper to the boundary ropes as West Indian tail-ender fails to strike the three runs needed to win the second ODI of the Benson and Hedges Series Cup in Sydney. This incident eventually leads to the introduction of the inner ring and fielding restrictions to limited-overs competition.

Chris Cowdrey makes his Test debut for England in the first Test against India in Bombay.

Mike Atherton, Mark Butcher, Nasser Hussain and Alec Stewart are all back in the pavilion as England suffer a nightmare starts to the first Test against South Africa at the Wanderers, falling to two for four in less than three overs.
