Oman pulled off the unlikeliest of run chases Wednesday when they scored 302-9 in 37 overs and one ball to secure a one-wicket victory over Uganda in the ICC World Cup Qualifiers.
Chasing an imposing Ugandan total of 298-5 at LC de Villiers Oval in Pretoria, the Omanis set about the task with gusto. An opening partnership of 49 came off just 19 deliveries, with openers Maqsood Hussein (23) and Hemin Desai (28) tearing apart the opening attack.
But then came a small flurry of wickets, bringing middle-order batsman Farhan Khan to the crease. He took up the assault with equal fury, scoring his 95 off just 49 deliveries, hitting 10 fours and seven sixes in the process.
Oman lost wickets throughout the chase, right down to their ninth with the scores tied on 298. But tailender Haider Ali held his nerve and smashed a boundary off the first ball of the 38th over to seal the victory.
In other matches, Afghanistan were defeated by five wickets by United Arab Emirates at Isak Steyl Stadium in Vanderbijlpark despite a fighting 69 by Asghar Stanikzai off 107 balls. The UAE's victory was spearheaded by Nithin Gopal's 81 and Saqib Ali who scored 69.
Kenya ran out easy winners over Denmark in Potchefstroom, winning by nine wickets on the back of Kennedy Otieno's undefeated 84. Otieno was well supported by Seren Waters who was unbeaten on 61.
Canada also produced a big win, overpowering Scotland by 148 runs in Benoni. Umar Bhatti who took 3-31, together with Henry Osinde (2-15) and Rizwan Cheema (2-14) saw Scotland slump to 104 all out in reply to Canada's 252-7.
Ireland outclassed Namibia by seven wickets, with captain William Porterfield scoring 84 while chasing down Namibia's meager 213-9 and the Netherlands were too strong for Bermuda, who fell 63 runs short of the 304-9 set by the Netherlands. That was despite a well-played 84 from Burmudan opener David Hemp.
