CA ban Smith and Warner for one year

Warner

Steve Smith and David Warner, former captain and vice-captain of Australia, have both been banned for one year following the board’s investigation into the ball-tampering scandal that occurred during the third Test against South Africa.

Cameron Bancroft, who was caught on camera applying sticky tape to the ball, was suspended for nine months but Smith and Warner, because of their standing as leaders in the team, copped the worse punishment.

In addition, both Smith and Warner will not be allowed to lead Australia for the next two years.

CA chief executive James Sutherland said on Tuesday that coach Darren Lehmann had no prior knowledge of the pre-mediated plan to alter the condition of the ball and will see out his contract that expires at the end of the 2019 Ashes series.

All three players have the right to appeal their sanctions and the durations of the penalties.

Smith is on his way back home from South Africa to Sydney and will hold a press conference on arrival.
