England have called up uncapped seamer Chris Woakes to the Test squad for the series against New Zealand, replacing the injured Tim Bresnan and pushing out Stuart Meaker, who toured India with the side last year.
While Woakes cracked the nod as Bresnan was ruled out with an elbow injury, all-rounder Samit Patel was shoved to the sidelines after a poor display on the sub-continent, despite doing well in the warm-up games in India.
New batsmen Joe Root and Nick Compton retained their places after solid debuts in India, meaning there was no room for James Taylor as Jonny Bairstow also remained in the squad.
As for the ODI squad, fast bowler Jade Dernbach and wicketkeeper Craig Kieswetter were understandable dropped, after fairly abject performances in the one-day series against India, which England lost, though Dernbach did retain his T20 place.
England will also be thrilled with the return of batsman Jonathan Trott to the ODI and Test sides, after he was rested for the India one-dayers, as was Graeme Swann.
National Selector, Geoff Miller, said: "With Tim Bresnan currently unavailable while his elbow is assessed there is a good opportunity for Chris Woakes to gain further experience in the international environment.
"We have a busy international summer ahead of us and the medical team felt this was an ideal opportunity for Bresnan to take some time out to ensure his elbow is functioning effectively.
"Woakes has impressed on the England Performance Programme and with England Lions and Warwickshire in recent years as well as with England in the limited overs formats.
"Craig Kieswetter has had an extended opportunity in ODI and T20 cricket. He has shown evidence of delivering performances on the international stage however we don't feel these have been delivered consistently enough.
"The door is not closed to Craig, and he can fight his way back into contention for international selection through consistent high performances with Somerset."
Meanwhile, Danny Briggs was ruled out of the tour after picking up a sprained ankle in training, meaning Root was added to the T20 squad in his stead.
England Test squad: Alastair Cook, James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow, Ian Bell, Stuart Broad, Nick Compton, Steve Finn, Graham Onions, Monty Panesar, Kevin Pietersen, Matt Prior, Joe Root, Graeme Swann, Jonathan Trott, Chris Woakes.
