Former England coach Ashley Giles has landed a new permanent job, being appointed as Lancashire's new head coach, as well as their director of cricket, starting immediately.

Giles was sacked from his role as interim England head coach following their disastrous World Twenty20 effort in March, but has now taken over in Manchester, filling both roles.

Current England coach Peter Moores was the leader for the Red Roses prior to taking over from Giles at the Three Lions. Mike Watkinson vacated the director role earlier this week, while Glen Chapple had been coaching the side in the interim.

Giles said on the ECB's website: "Lancashire is a massive club with a rich pedigree and history, and I am thrilled by the prospect of coaching them.

"Emirates Old Trafford is a stunning international venue with excellent facilities and I cannot wait to work with the players and staff.

"It is our intention to return to Division One but our main aim is create something both successful and sustainable, which a club with such an incredible history deserves."

Prior to his England role, Giles had been with Warwickshire to great success, taking them to titles in 2008 and 2010, and this cemented his place within the Lancashire bosses' minds.

"Ashley Giles is a highly respected and regarded coach with a track record of success in the county game and has a tremendous amount of international experience garnered through a playing and coaching career," Lancashire chairman Michael Cairns OBE said.

"He is an exceptional candidate for a county like Lancashire and we are delighted to have secured his services."
