Cobras lose Thomas to broken ankle

Somerset veteran fast bowler Alfonso Thomas, who had been set to play for the Cobras in this year’s Ram Slam T20 has been ruled out of action with a broken ankle.

Thomas picked up the freak injury while playing golf, and confirmed on Twitter than he had slipped down some wet steps. He has already had surgery, and Somerset are hopeful of his swift recovery.

The club’s statement read: “The 37 year old, who enjoyed a highly successful 2014 season, during which he claimed 53 wickets in the County Championship which included becoming the first Somerset bowler ever to take four wickets in four balls, and topped the Club’s averages, slipped and broke his ankle while playing golf.

“Alfonso has since undergone surgery and is now on the way to making a full recovery.”

Matt Maynard the Somerset Director of Cricket said: “It is really unfortunate news for Alfonso and we wish him a speedy recovery. These things do happen and we now need to focus on his rehabilitation and getting him fit to play for next season.”
