Dhoni: Umpires must have better control
India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has implored everyone to move along from the James Anderson/Ravi Jadeja incident, but added that umpires should have better control of the players in the middle.
India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has implored everyone to move along from the James Anderson/Ravi Jadeja incident, but added that umpires should have better control of the players in the middle.
With the ICC declining to appeal Anderson's 'not guilty' verdict after being accused of shoving and verbally abusing Jadeja, Dhoni was keen to draw a line under the drama ahead of the fourth Test in Manchester.
But he did say that foul language had no place in cricket, despite it being a common occurrence even in his own team, and hoped that officials would be stricter about over the top sledging in future.
The skipper said ahead of the game at Old Trafford: "It's time for us to move ahead. It's important to concentrate on cricket. The good thing that came out was that was Jadeja was fine.
"What's important is to realise that strong characters are needed in the game. What needs to be done is for umpires to step in whenever an individual crosses the line.
"The world has changed. A lot of emphasis has been put on winning games.
"We talk about spirit of the game, we all know as individuals the guidelines that need to be followed, at times the officials can be quite generous to the individuals.
"If someone is very consistent with the abuse then he should be punished. Foul language should not be used on the field.
"I think we have to be careful as to where we are going."
