Chief executive Warren Deutrom has suggested fast bowler Boyd Rankin return to Cricket Ireland ahead of next year's World Cup in Australasia.

Rankin stopped representing the Irish toward the end of 2012 – and has since played seven ODIs, two Twenty20 Internationals and one Test for England.

A poor Test debut and shoulder injury, however, has the Londonderry-born seamer fall from favour – and contemplate quitting the game entirely.

"There is a sense that it would be a shame if a player like Boyd was not there. And that has given me a sense that all is not lost in the hope to see him playing for Ireland in the World Cup," Deutrom told ESPNcricinfo.

The Irish have been pooled with the West Indies, United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Zimbabwe, India and Pakistan at the 2015 World Cup, which will be hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
