Erwee headlines sensational Dolphins display
Player of the tournament in the Africa T20 Cup Sarel Erwee’s golden 2017/18 season continued in a 15 run DLS win over the Cobras in the Dolphins Ram Slam opener.
Erwee carried his bat to end with an unbeaten 103 off 58 balls which included five sixes and ten fours.
Morne van Wyk (19) helped provide some early impetus for the Dolphins who sent in former Cobra Dane Vilas at three in a team packed full of allrounders.
Vilas (32) started off in Erwee’s shadow but soon found another gear as the Dolphins get their foot firmly on the gas throughout their innings.
After Vilas’ departure Erwee shared an incredible 136 run partnership with his skipper Khaya Zondo.
Zondo (67*) showed great urgency between the wickets exploiting some of the Cobras less agile fielders and keeping the scoreboard ticking over.
The skipper also helped two lucky fans bag a million Rand by offering up a brace of crowd catches off two of his four sixes.
The purple-clad Dolphins bested the previous highest total in domestic 20-over cricket with their 231/2 eclipsing the 230 for five scored by the Titans against the Lions last year.
The Dolphins made early inroads into the Cobras much talked about top order quickly removing three of the four internationals headlining the batting for the Cape side.
Robbie Frylinck had Richard Levi (7) caught behind early on before Keshav Maharaj accounted for Proteas teammate Temba Bavuma (6).
When Cobras skipper JP Duminy was run out for just 1 and the Cobras were 20 for 3 the game looked to be over but Hashim Amla and Aviwe Mgijima were able to put the pressure back on the men from KZN moving to 86 for 3 before lightning stopped play.
Rain soon followed and when the players returned the Cobras were left a steep challenge of getting 38 off ten balls.
Both Amla and Mgijima plundered sixes off Prenelan Subrayen but with 24 needed off the final over from Andile Phehlukwayo the Dolphins held their nerve and earned the win their batting display deserved.
