England have awarded opening batsman Nick Compton an increment contract, as a reward for his four Tests on the tour to India, which included a half century in the third Test.

Compton came into the side to replace Andrew Strauss, who retired after the South Africa series earlier in the year. The Somerset batsman has impressed with his calm, often dogged displays, and has thus been bumped up a grade.

ECB national selector Geoff Miller said: "This award reflects the contribution Nick has made. I would like to congratulate him on his achievements since making his international debut last month."

The next step would be a central contract, which only core members of the England set up are asked to sign.
