All-rounder Grant Elliott has been added to the New Zealand ODI squad for the series against South Africa after Corey Anderson was ruled out through injury.

Batting all-rounder Anderson, who has played three T20s for the Kiwis, suffered a fracture to his left thumb and will play no part in the three-match series with Proteas, which gets underway on in Paarl on January 19.

South African-born Elliott, who has played five Tests for the Black Caps, will take his place in the team.

"With the injury to Corey Anderson we decided to replace him with another batting all-rounder in Grant Elliott," coach Mike Hesson said.

"Grant comes into the squad with invaluable knowledge and experience of South African conditions."
