England batsman Joe Root didn't actually get to make any runs on his ODI debut, but he did bowl nine overs of spin against the Indians and afterwards said he had hoped to be called upon.

The Yorkshireman was supposed to bat at four, but kept being pushed down the order as England aimed for a big score, and they made 325 for four. They nearly lost the game though as India chased hard, and they won by a narrow nine runs.

Root's nine overs for 51 runs were some of the more economical of the innings, and he said that while he aimed to be someone Alastair Cook could call upon in a pinch, he was surprised to be given so many overs.

The aspiring all-rounder said: "That probably hasn't happened since I was 10 or 11 years old, playing my first men's cricket, but it was fantastic and I wouldn't change a thing.

"I've been working hard on the bowling to give the captain as many options as possible out there. The aim was that if I possibly had a chance to bowl I wouldn't disappoint and be consistent as possible.

"I've been working really hard for a couple of years now and working here with Mushy (spin bowling coach Mushtaq Ahmed). I need to make sure it is going to be a really big asset for me in the future and take any chances of having as many options as I can to give myself the best chance of selection."
