All-rounder Ben Cutting has been called up as cover for seamers Mitchell Johnson and Mitchell Starc, ahead of Australia's third ODI against Sri Lanka in Brisbane on Friday.

Johnson and Starc missed the second match, which the visitors won by eight wickets to level the five-match series at one win apiece, due to respective side and calf injuries.

Cutting, meanwhile, was afforded a debut - and weighed in with a promising 27 down the order before securing fine figures of one for 42 in 10 overs.

"Ben is here in Brisbane as a precaution due to Johnson and Starc coming back from injury. If both pace bowlers prove their fitness to play as expected, Ben will re-join the Brisbane Heat on Friday afternoon for the Big Bash League final," said national selector John Inverarity.

The Australians are also waiting on the fitness of all-rounder Moises Henriques, who sustained an injury to his right hand during Thursday's practice session.
