New Zealand have recalled fast bowler Tim Southee to the side for the first time since his thumb injury, replacing the injured Mitchell McClenaghan for the second ODI against England.

Southee recently returned to action in the Plunket Shield after a long lay-off, but he and Hamish Rutherford have been added to the squad for the second match in Napier. Rutherford, the son of legend Ken, replaces Martin Guptill.

The batsman picked up a hamstring injury during the first match, which he helped win with a quick 27 not out, while McClenaghan, one of the finds of the tour, picked up a side strain.

"Unfortunately Mitchell will miss the rest of the one day series while Martin will be out for Wednesday night and we will assess him again [on Monday]," New Zealand physiotherapist Paul Close said.

Squad for second ODI: Brendon McCullum (captain), Trent Boult, Grant Elliott, Andrew Ellis, James Franklin, Nathan McCullum, Kyle Mills, Colin Munro, Hamish Rutherford, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor, BJ Watling, Kane Williamson.
