Imran Farhat
1 match, 2 inns, 73 runs @ 36.50
Whipped in from the wilderness in the wake of Taufeeq Umar's injury and Nasir Jamshed's inadequacies, Farhat suggested he still has what it takes after a three-year absence from the Test arena. C365 Rating: 6.5/10
Asad Shafiq
3 matches, 6 inns, 199 runs @ 33.16, 1x100
Newland's century, during a telling alliance alongside Younis Khan, was good as it got for young Shafiq - before the rest of the series was laid to waste. Philander Steyn, ultimately, made the Pakistani their bunny. C365 Rating: 7/10
Younis Khan
3 matches, 6 inns, 184 runs @ 30.66, 1x100
There is fight left in the old dog, yet. But not enough to stave off top gun opposition in conditions atypical of the sub-continent and gulf. Younis and Misbah spoke vehemently of their need to lead the lesser experienced by example, but failed to walk the talk. C365 Rating: 6.5/10
Misbah-ul-Haq
3 matches, 6 inns, 135 runs @ 22.50, 1x50
Younis, at least, drew one century from the defeated campaign. Misbah, though, didn't get close - and perished fishing mindlessly outside his off-stump time and time again. C365 Rating: 4.5/10
Nasir Jamshed
2 matches, 4 inns, 51 runs @ 12.75
So dominant in ODI cricket, Jamshed deserved his maiden call-up to the Test fold. The step up to the big stage proved a bridge too far, and he was rightly dropped for the final fixture. C365 Rating: 3/10
Azhar Ali
3 matches, 6 inns, 133 runs @ 22.16, 1x50
Brimming with promise but bloated with under-delivery, Ali will admonish himself for failing to convert healthy starts. Another Pakistan batsman unable to weather an overly attacking temperament outside the off-stump. C365 Rating: 4/10
Ehsan Adil
1 match, 2 wkts @ 27.50, BB: 2/54
Pakistan always required the additional firepower in conditions primed for pace bowling. Adil, offered a baptism of fire, fared well enough - but was hampered by a late injury. He deserves another crack, presumably against the same opposition in the UAE later this year. C365 Rating: 6.5/10
Saeed Ajmal
3 matches, 11 wkts @ 33.18, BB: 6/96
Living up to expectation, the spinner was the only bowler to genuinely Test the Proteas - and his first-innings six-for at Newlands certainly showed an otherwise impenetrable Proteas order can, indeed, be fallible. C365 Rating: 8/10
Junaid Khan
1 match, 2 wkts @ 48.00, BB: 2/33
His first visit to a country - and conditions - that would really bring out the best in his left-arm swing and seam, Junaid's ambition was quashed by injury. An extended stay may well have, at least, kept Pakistan in the three-match competition for longer than 10 days. C365 Rating: 6/10
Mohammad Hafeez
3 matches, 6 inns, 43 runs @ 7.16, 5 wkts @ 21.40, BB: 4/16
An absolute write-off series for the opener, whose fragile technique was promptly thrust into the limelight. He clung onto his role as an all-rounder, though, clinching a futile four-for at the Wanderers. Perhaps, as we've seen in limited-overs cricket, a stint down the order is in order. C365 Rating: 3/10
Sarfraz Ahmed
3 matches, 6 inns, 83 runs @ 13.83, 8xct
Wicketkeeping-wise, better than Kamran Akmal, batting-wise, as average as Adnan Akmal, Ahmed will probably be resigned to the selectorss fickle wicketkeeper-batsman's merry-go-round. C365 Rating: 3.5/10
Tanvir Ahmed
1 match, 1 wkt @ 60.00, BB: 1/34
Tanvir cherished a sound series against the Proteas in the UAE a couple of years ago, but was largely out of his depths in South Africa. C365 Rating: 3/10
Rahat Ali
2 matches, 6 wkts @ 37.83, BB: 6/127
The nominal success story of an otherwise doomed trip to Southern shores, Ali's six-for in Centurion was an inspired affair. Workmanlike rather than very talented, he'd do well to add a yard or two of pace to his 24-year-old action. C365 Rating: 7/10
Mohammad Irfan
2 matches, 3 wkts @ 67.00, BB: 3/86
Pakistan's great hope at the start of the series, they kept Irfan wrapped in cotton wool until the second match. He did not quite live up to the tall order, and the brains trust still don't know if he has the stamina for five days of Test cricket due to the four- and three-day finishes. C365 Rating: 5/10
Umar Gul
2 matches, 5 wkts @ 46.80, BB: 2/56
The wise old owl among a flock of very inexperience fledglings, Gul was then robbed of seniority in Centurion due to injury. Like Junaid, his consistent presence might have kept the tourists afloat for a bit longer. C365 Rating: 6/10
