Australia fast bowler Jackson Bird has been sent home from India to undergo tests on his lower back, after which he will rejoin the squad if the injury isn't too serious.

Bird didn't play in the first Test against India in Chennai, but complained of back pain during training, so the powers that be have decided it would be best if he had the matter checked out at home.

Australian team doctor Peter Brukner said: "Jackson has reported some low level back pain and we feel the best course of action to determine the issue is to send him back to Australia for scans.

"If the scans come back clear, then he will return to India to take up his place with the squad."
