- Test debut: v Pakistan at Lahore, November 2005
- ODI debut: v Pakistan at Lahore - December 10 2005
- Only made his first-class debut for Durham in 2003 as cover for Steve Harmison.
- Took 50 wickets for the first time in 2005, and was called into the England team to tour Pakistan following the withdrawal of Simon Jones.
- Fast-medium bowler with a mechanical, front-on action. Also capable of useful lower-order runs.
- Went to Australia in 06/07 but could only watch during the Test Series defeat. Finally made an impact in the latter stages of the CB series taking 12 wickets as England bounced back to take the trophy.
- After struggling against West Indies in the early part of the 2007 season, spent two years outside the England set-up.
- Impressive all-round performances as Durham claimed their second straight County Championship title earned him a Test recall for the 2009/10 tour of South Africa as England tried to fill the hole left by Andrew Flintoff's retirement.
- Injuries to the likes of Stuart Broad and James Anderson saw the Durham man also called up as a late replacement for the one-day series.
