Career summary

- Test debut: v Sri Lanka, at Lord's, May 2006

- ODI debut: v New Zealand, at Bristol, July 4 2004

- Lancashire fast-medium bowler famously plucked from the Bolton Leagues in 2002 while working as a shelf stacker in a supermarket.

- Selected for England A's tour to India and Malaysia in 2003-04 despite having picked up just six first-class wickets in his embryonic career.

- Performances against Sri Lanka and Pakistan in the 2006 Test summer earned him an Ashes spot the following winter but failed to make an impact.

- Injuries meant he was called into the ODI side that gained success in the CB series and those performances earned him a World Cup spot.

- But after England's poor showing in the Caribbean, Mahmood was one of those to pay the price and he spent two-and-a-half years in the international wilderness.

- Recalled for England's 2009/10 tour of South Africa.
