- Test debut v Australia at Darwin - July 2004.
- ODI debut v United Arab Emirates at Dambulla - July 2004.
- Bowling with a slingy action much like Jeff Thomson used to, he was a surprise choice for the 2004 tour to Australia, despite having acquired an excellent domestic reputation. He justified his selection with ten wickets in the two-Test series.
- A regular in the ODI side, Malinga specialises in bowling at the death, delivering consistently well-placed yorkers.
