- Test debut v India at Colombo (RPS) - August 1997.
- ODI debut v Zimbabwe at Colombo (RPS) - January 1998.
- His debut coincided with Sri Lanka making Test cricket's highest total, he contributed 66 to a mountainous 952 for seven declared.
- His liking for big scores was soon evident as he made 167 in his fourth Test against New Zealand and followed it up with 242 in just his seventh, this time against India.
- His masterful 120 enabled Sri Lanka to successfully chase a target of 303 to beat England in the 1999 Carlton & United Series in Australia.
- Was named Sri Lankan captain in 2006 and held the role until 2009 when he handed the reigns to Kumar Sangakkara.
- Captained Sri Lanka to the 2007 World Cup final.
