- Hit 143 not out in 125 balls against Pakistan in the 2003 World Cup, helping Australia to victory in the tournament.
- Suspended for turning up drunk before Australia's embarrassing ODI loss to Bangladesh in 2005.
- Came into the Ashes 06/07 side after the retirement of Damien Martyn and scored 156 at the MCG to cement his place in the side.
- A major force as Australia clinched another World Cup crown in 2007.
- Was a victim of racist chants by Indian supporters during a one-day tour in 2007, and was then at the centre of the Harbhajan Singh controversy after he alleged that the offspinner had called him a monkey during the Sydney Test in 2007-08.
- Secured the most lucrative contract of all the non-Indian players in the inaugural IPL auction when Deccan Chargers bid US$1.35m.
- Dropped from the squad for going fishing instead of attending a team meeting, he missed an ODI series at home to Bangladesh and the subsequent tour of India.
- Returned at the beginning of the 2008-09 Australian summer but was forced to undergo knee surgery and missed the tour of South Africa.
- Played a part in Deccan Chargers' 2009 IPL victory under the captaincy of his former Australia teammate Adam Gilchrist.
- Returned to the Australian side for the World Twenty20 but was sent home after breaking a drinking ban which was made a part of his contract due to numerous alcohol-related indiscretions. He had already been left out of the Ashes squad.
- Stripped of his national contract, Symonds admitted that he had a binge drinking problem but denied being an alcoholic.
