- Shah was called into the side to tour Pakistan and India in 2006 as cover and finally made his Test debut at Mumbai, where an England win secured a 1-1 series draw. Shah made 88 in the first innings to help set up the victory.
- Made his ODI debut in 2001 and had some impressive early displays.
- His international ambitions were hampered when his form dropped and he was relieved of the captaincy at Middlesex in 2004.
