- Test Debut: Australia v Pakistan at Adelaide, January 1990.

- ODI Debut: Pakistan v Sri Lanka at Sharjah, March 23 1989.

- Wisden Cricketer of the Year 1997, Ahmed bowls legbreak with googlies galore.

- Ahmed styled himself on Abdul Qadir, his hero whom he replaced in the side, and like Qadir, developed a wide range of bowling variations only comparative with Shane Warne.

- He took 5 or more wickets in an innings on 10 occasions, with his best figures of 7-56 coming against New Zealand in 1995.

- In 2003 he became the first bowler in five years to take 100 wickets in the English season, and helped Sussex lift their first Championship title in their history.
