Career summary

- Test debut v South Africa at Ahmedabad - November 1996.

- ODI debut v Zimbabwe at Cuttack - April 1998.

- Vangipurappu Venkata Sai Laxman is a right-handed batsman of considerable talent with great timing, he also bowls a bit of right-arm offbreak.

- He scored an amazing 281 against Australia at Eden Gardens in 2001, and broke Sunil Gavaskar's long-standing record of 236 not out, this was later eclisped by Virender Sehwag's 309 against Pakistan in 2004.

- India's strength in the middle-order has often seen him miss out in the early stages of his career when they opted for five batsmen.

- Laxman went though a bit of a slump in the ODI side and was left out of the 2003 World Cup, but after that disappointment made an emphatic return scoring a string of hundreds in Australia and followed it up with a match-winning 107 in the series decider in Indian's historic tour of Pakistan in 2004.

- He once again tormented Australia in 2008, scoring another double ton to help the hosts to draw the third Test and claim the Border-Gavaskar Trophy honours.

- Named Wisden Cricketer of the Year 2002.
