- Test debut v India at Colombo (SSC) - July 2008.
- ODI debut v West Indies at Port of Spain - April 2008.
- Enjoyed a fruitful spell with the Sri Lankan Army side before joining the national team.
- After making his ODI debut against the West Indies Mendis rose to prominence in the 2008 Asia Cup when he bamboozled the Indian batsman with a devastating display that saw him finish with figures of 6 for 13.
- Called up for the 2008 series against India, he finsihed the series with the best figures for a bowler in a three match-debut series, as well as becoming the first Sri Lankan to take eight wickets on Test debut.
- Has mastered the 'carrom ball' to great effect, a delivery in which the ball is released by flicking it between the thumb and a bent middle finger.
- Represents the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League.
