Netherlands Upset ScotsMonday 4th August 2008Essex all-rounder Ryan ten Doeschate performed heroics with bat and ball to book Holland's World Twenty20 place with a five-wicket victory over Scotland in Belfast. The 28-year-old claimed figures of three for 23 to limit the Saltires to 107 for eight off their 20 overs - Scotland losing their last five wickets for seven runs. And ten Doeschate was back at it with the bat, booking his country's place in the qualifiers final by smashing Majid Haq for the winning runs on the way to an unbeaten 24 off 18 balls. Durham ace Kyle Coetzer provided the only ray of light for Scotland, hitting 40 off 44 balls while their World Twenty20 place now depends on a third-place play-off with Kenya. The Scots took just nine runs from their opening three overs before Coetzer let loose, smashing Mudassar Bukhari for successive boundaries. Coetzer repeated the trick in the sixth over, this time dispatching all-rounder ten Doeschate to the fence twice as the Scots raced to 35. Skipper Ryan Watson (22) joined in with a boundary of his own in the 11th over but was cleaned up by Peter Borren an over later after a partnership of 55 with Coetzer. Warwickshire ace Navdeep Poonia and Coetzer combined to take the score to 77 before confusion ensued and the Durham batsman was run out for 40. Keeper Colin Smith fell four balls later, hauling ten Doeschate out to Pieter Seelaar in the 15th over for a duck to spark a Scottish collapse. Poonia and Gavin Hamilton took the score to 98 before ten Doeschate claimed two Scottish victims in his final over. Hamilton top-edged to Darron Reekers at point for eight, Neil McCallum fell for a first-ball duck and Poonia was run out for 25 attempting a quick single. The Scots battled to 107 but not without further drama with Richard Berrington and Gordon Drummond both being run out for two. Holland were dealt an early blow when seamer John Blain dismissed Reekers for two in the first over. However Tom de Grooth boosted Holland's cause, smashing three boundaries on the way to 34 before being dismissed with the score at 50 trying one too many off Berrington. The 21-year-old struck again to remove Bukhari for nine before two quick wickets from Blain and Dewald Nel threatened to ruin Holland's party in the 15th over. However Essex star ten Doeschate and Borren (16 not out) kept their nerve, bludgeoning five boundaries between them to guide the Dutch home with two overs to spare. ©2006 - 365 Media Group Any reproduction, publication or redistribution of this material without the written agreement of 365 Media Group is strictly forbidden. |
