England's women slumped to a 35-run defeat in the first game of their five-match one-day international series against India in Bangalore.

Half-centuries from Mithali Raj and Priyanka Roy guided India to 199 for five in their 50 overs, but England were unable to capitalise on Ebony-Jewel Rainford-Brent's 64 as they were bowled out for 164, Jhulan Goswami and Gouher Sultana taking three wickets apiece.

Raj made a steady 62 and put on exactly 100 for India's fifth wicket with Roy, whose unbeaten 69 came from 98 balls and featured six fours. Katherine Brunt, Jenny Gunn and captain Charlotte Edwards took one wicket apiece as England's bowlers struggled.

Rainford-Brent put on 38 with Edwards (20) and 53 with Lydia Greenway (35) but Caroline Atkins (21) was the only other England batter to reach double figures as Beth Morgan and Gunn fell for ducks, the latter rounding off Goswami's superb figures of three for 16 from eight overs.

The tail offered little resistance, Sultana removing Brunt and Anya Shrubsole to finish with three for 26 from 10 overs as India bowled out the tourists with five overs to spare to take a 1-0 series lead going into Sunday's game at the same venue.
