England's women held their nerve when it mattered to defeat India by three runs in Bangalore on Sunday and square their one-day international series.

The hosts looked set to go 2-0 up when they needed 10 runs off the final three overs with four wickets remaining - but England finished strongly.

Captain Charlotte Edwards won the toss at the Chinnaswamy stadium and led by example with 43 out of her team's 183 for eight.

The hosts slipped to 16 for four with Katherine Brunt capturing all four wickets but the hosts rallied with a partnership of 106 between Mithali Raj and Amita Sharma turned things in their favour.

However, the wickets tumbled in the closing stages, with Brunt was claiming a fifth scalp, and England got the win they needed.

Edwards said afterwards: "This means a lot to us. It was a great performance by the bowlers today and it shows what we can do even without experienced players such as Clare Taylor, Sarah Taylor and Nicky Shaw."

The next match between the teams is in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday.
