Bangladesh sealed a comprehensive seven-wicket victory over New Zealand in Mirpur to secure an unassailable 2-0 lead in the one-day international series.

The hosts overcame a modest target of 174 after Shahriar Nafis (73) and Imrul Kayes (50) put on an impressive 127-run partnership for the first wicket.

Spinner Suhrawadi Shuvo also helped set up the victory for the Tigers, claiming three wickets in his spell of 10 overs as New Zealand's batsmen - with the exception of Ross Taylor (62) - struggled against a strong spin attack.

Forced to bat first after losing the toss, the tourists made a dismal start losing the dangerous Brendon McCullum for a duck in the opening over before Jesse Ryder and BJ Watling steadied the ship.

However, the introduction of spin as early as the ninth over put New Zealand on the backfoot as they struggled to negotiate turn and low bounce on a track which had seen some rain over the last few days.

Abdur Razak provided the breakthrough by claiming Watling (20), who fell attempting to hit him over mid-on in the 14th over. Shuvo then added the wicket of Ryder (33) in the next next over to leave New Zealand on 56 for three

Taylor attempted a rescue mission, first with Daniel Vettori (nine) and then with

Shanan Stewart (14), but both his partners fell to Shuvo's guile.

The spin troika of Shuvo, Razak and Shakib kept the tourists under check and the visitors had been reduced to 101 for seven in 32.4 overs.

However, Taylor held the innings together and found an able partner in Kyle Mills, as their eighth-wicket stand took the team past the 150-run mark in 39.2 overs.

New Zealand made most of the batting powerplay by adding 55 runs in the five-over period.

Taylor reached his half-century off 66 balls with three boundaries and as many sixes.

However, Shakib broke the 72-run partnership claiming the wicket of Mills, who had hit three huge sixes for his 28-ball 26, to leave the visitors on 173 for eight.

Mohammad Mahmudullah then finished off the tail, claiming two wickets off successive deliveries to end the New Zealand innings at 173 with seven overs remaining. Taylor remained unbeaten on 62.

Shuvo returned impressive figures of three for 14 in his 10 overs, which included two maidens. Shakib gave him good support claiming two important wickets.

Bangladesh openers Nafis and Kayes then carried the momentum forward by making a positive start to their chase, scoring at a brisk pace to bring up the fifty partnership in just 48 balls.

Nafis was the more aggressive of the two left-handers and he reached his half-century in just 49 balls with the help of 10 boundaries.

Kayes, who was dropped in the first over, was content to play second fiddle to his team-mate, but also helped himself to a half-century, which came off 82 balls with just four hits to the fence.

Nathan McCullum's double blow then gave Bangladesh a scare. Nafis, who hit an entertaining 73 off 73 balls with 13 boundaries, was the first to go while Kayes' wicket seven runs later gave some anxious moments.

However, replacements Junaid Siddique and Raqibul Hasan added 25 runs to take their team closer to victory.

There was one more hiccup as Andy McKay saw off Siddique for 14, but captain Shakib Al Hasan (13 not out) took the team home with a boundary off Mills as Raqibul remained unbeaten on 18 off 53 balls.

It's the first time that Bangladesh are guaranteed not to lose a series against a Full Member country.

The fourth one-day international takes place on Thursday.
