The first one-day international between India and Australia in Kochi was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to inclement weather.

A wet outfield caused by heavy rains over the past week delayed the start on Sunday, with the outfield of the Nehru stadium still covered at the scheduled toss time of 8.30am (03:00 GMT).

Although the umpires inspected half an hour later, the outfield was sodden with the bowlers' run-ups a particular concern.

A further inspection was scheduled for 11.00am but the rain returned to force the officials into calling the match off, much to the dismay of thousands of local supporters who had flocked to the stadium.

The remaining two one-dayers will be played in Visakhapatnam on October 20 and Goa on October 24.

India swept the Test series 2-0.
