West Indian Twenty20 International captain Darren Sammy has signed a contract with the Hobart Hurricanes ahead of the Big Bash League later this year.

All-rounder Sammy is expected to be available for the opening six matches of the franchise's 2013-14 campaign in Australia's premier domestic Twenty20 tournament before rejoining the West Indies.

"With players like George Bailey, Alex Hales and Ben Dunk, there is a lot of exciting talent in the team already. I am really looking forward to coming to Tasmania and taking part in the Big Bash League," said Sammy.

"I have heard so much about coach Damien Wright, he seems like a West Indian, very cool and an amazing fellow. A few of my West Indian team-mates might also be playing in the Big Bash League, so I'm looking forward to the contest with them."

The BBL will start on 18 December. Hobart's first fixture will be against the Melbourne Stars two days later at the MCG. The Sydney Thunder will be without Test captain Michael Clarke and batsman David Warner throughout. The veteran Brad Hodge, meanwhile, has joined the Adelaide Strikers.
