WICB, players have ‘fruitful’ meeting

The West Indies players who left their tour of India with a number of fixtures still to play have met with the West Indies Cricket Board in Jamaica, and the WICB have described the meeting as ‘fruitful’.

The players abandoned the trip over a salary agreement, signed between the WICB and the West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA), which they say they had not agreed to. The only player not part of the talks was Marlon Samuels.

He has said he didn’t want to leave the tour, not being a member of WIPA, and was thus not at the meeting. The players from the tour were joined by Chris Gayle, Sunil Narine and Lendl Simmons, who were not on the trip.

A statement read: “The West Indies Cricket Board, the West Indies Players’ Association and representatives of the West Indies Squad on the tour of India held an emergency meeting on Sunday evening at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in Kingston, Jamaica.”

They didn’t seem to come to any resolutions though: “The meeting was cordial, positive and fruitful and discussions will continue in an effort to find a way forward following the premature end of the tour of India.”

The WICB were represented by president Dave Cameron, who Samuels had earlier lambasted for not flying to India to try and cut the matter off before it exploded. All parties had their lawyers present too.
