Smith to donate Canada T20 League fee to grassroots cricket
Former Australia captain Steve Smith will donate his salary he will earn playing in the Canada Global T20 to grassroots cricket programs, according to an article published on the Cricket Australia website.
Tournament organisers have already confirmed that Smith will take part in the domestic T20 event in the North American country that is set to start on 28 June.
The former Aussie skipper is currently suspended from international and State cricket due to his part in the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa that rocked the cricketing world, but he is allowed to play club cricket and in domestic competitions overseas.
According to the article on the Cricket Australia website, Smith will donate to grassroots cricket both in Australia and in Canada.
Also, as part of his deal with tournament organisers in Canada, Smith will also hold training camps to help promote the sport in the country.
Smith will be joined by international stars including Chris Gayle, Andre Russell, Shahid Afridi, Darren Sammy, Lasith Malinga, Sunil Narine, David Miller and Dwayne Bravo for the month-long tournament.
In a statement released by the Canada T20 League last week, it said the competition will consist of six teams – five representing Canadian cities with a sixth, Cricket West Indies (CWI) representative team, consisting entirely of players from the Caribbean.
